Who else wants a hot body?

This year is different. This is the year I’m finally going to banish ‘lose weight’ from my resolutions list forever!

No more gym memberships that are just a donation to the health club, no longer will I need therapy each time I come out of the changing room of a women’s clothing shop. Gone will be my envious glances at the skinny mum of five in gym gear at school drop off. I’m getting myself a hot new body and keeping it.

Let’s call it my ‘Reluctant Makeover’ because let’s face it, I’d much rather be lounging in my garden with a slice of cake than pumping iron at the gym. The pull of gravity leaves me no choice, however, and I just know if I don’t do this I’ll come back to haunt all the gyms I joined and never used.

So I’ve called on my trusted personal trainer Teurai Chanakira of Fitness to a Tee. I consider myself a pretty strong and determined woman but when it comes to exercise, self control is not one of my strengths.

EAW: For someone like me, busy mum, working, time poor – how do I fit in time to even think about exercise?

Richard Branson was once asked ‘what is the secret to your productivity?’ His reply was, ‘working out’.

We all have the same amount of hours in a day. No matter how busy we are, we can fit in exercise IF we choose to. You can even fit in 20 mins in the morning or for example, if you drive – park 20 mins away from work and walk briskly the rest of the way. And the busier you are, the more important exercise and good nutrition is – not just for reducing stress, but increasing mental clarity, energy, productivity and ensuring you are around longer for your kids, family etc.

EAW: What’s the most common reason that people come to work with you?

People are generally motivated to work with me because they get quick results (generally within 3-4 weeks) provided they stick to their personalised Fitness to a Tee exercise and nutrition program. The programs have had a high success rate particularly for those struggling to lose a flabby belly – a common problem.

Furthermore, the exercise programs have a lot of variety so that you never get bored; one can choose whether they want to do one on one sessions with me in Melbourne, or workout from home or outdoors via the online programs; and the constant motivation, accountability, support and personalised consulting provided catapult you to your goals.

EAW: I actually did a few one on one sessions with you in Melbourne and then moved across to the online program because we relocated to New South Wales and I must say I’ve found you just as accessible. How do you manage the different time zones when dealing with overseas clients?

That’s great that you still found me accessible! Yes the different time zones can be challenging, but usually once someone has their private exercise video, daily meal plan and extra material, a lot of the support is then handled by email unless there are special requirements such as when I feel I really need to motivate someone over the phone regarding a specific matter.

I generally have my iPad around with me at work so between clients, I’m able to respond quickly to my overseas clients and I also have set dates that I check in on them. What it boils down to is that if you want something to work, there’s always a way!

EAW: Is it possible for everyone to have a hot body or are most of us just fighting a losing battle against our genes?

It is possible for everyone to have a hot body! Having a hot body takes a lot of positive mindset change so ditching negative thoughts such as ‘I will never lose weight’ and believing that you can do it. Whatever the mind conceives, the body believes! I won’t lie, it is hard work, but if you have determination, focus and are consistent with good nutrition and regular exercise, then you can do it.

EAW: What’s the secret to losing and maintaining the weight?

Nutrition nutrition nutrition! Eating right accounts for up to 80% of whether you lose weight and the maintenance of it.

The other 20% is made up of exercise, with resistance based moves being the most effective. Examples of resistance based moves include squats, lunges, push-ups etc…but there are so many exercises out there which you can choose from.

EAW: The biggest myths about weight loss?

That you can eat junk as long as you exercise – and you will lose or maintain weight. Nutrition is so important and you cannot have fitness without it. It accounts for up to 80% of whether you achieve any goal you have for your body.

Another one is that if a woman lifts weights she’ll look like a man and should only focus on cardio exercises such as jogging. Whilst cardio exercises are great for improving cardiovascular health etc., there are much better benefits of using weights for women e.g. quicker weight loss and toning results, strengthening the bones thus helping to prevent osteoporosis and much more!

EAW: For someone motivated right now and wanting to finally get control of their weight, what are the key things they need to do?

Firstly they have to get rid of negative thoughts like ‘it’s too hard’, ‘I can’t do it’. Our mind is our biggest downfall when it comes to controlling weight so if you can conquer that – you’re halfway there. If you don’t know what to do, remember there’s always help out there. Please visit the Fitness to a Tee website if you need help on how to get started.

Secondly I’d say visit your GP to ensure that you are safe to exercise. Your GP will check for things like blood pressure levels etc.

Finally, if you’re not sure where to start with exercise, visit your local gym and speak to a Personal Trainer who can put you on course to getting quicker results than you would get on your own, trying to weave through the mass of exercise and nutrition information out there. The great thing about the internet is that there are also online programs available to you so you don’t have to join a gym – you can also exercise in the comfort of your own home. You can visit the Fitness to a Tee website for information on online programs.

EAW: I’m interested to know how and why you got into the health and fitness business? It’s not an industry with many black women, you’re actually the first one I’ve personally come across.

I’ve always had a passion for health and fitness since I was a teenager. Growing up in Zimbabwe, my parents always encouraged me to play sports so I was in the school Tennis and Hockey teams since age 11. I also loved swimming, riding my bike and was always active. I left Zimbabwe when I was 13 years old when I emigrated to Germany with my family. I started running and doing weights from the age of 16 and was usually the only African girl doing weights in the gym in university in the UK and riding my bike to lectures.

I always dreamed of being a Personal Trainer so I could pass on the great feeling I’ve always had from staying fit. When my mother passed away from cancer in 2010, this fuelled me further because the statistics show that most cancers can be prevented by adopting a healthier lifestyle. So I sought out to make a difference in whatever way I could plus my mother’s death really made me see that life is too short to live life wondering ‘what if’.

EAW: What do you find most rewarding about your business?

Patiently watching and being a part of helping people not only transform their bodies, but their minds and lives. I’ve been very blessed to have several success stories and it’s a pity that I cannot list all of them here. The ones that I’ll mention here are definitely not the most significant as everyone whom I’ve trained is unique and I’m proud of all of them.

Some examples of my success stories include helping Melbourne-based Shahani who after battling with her weight for 4 years due to a traumatic event in her life, has now lost the weight recommended by her GP after 6 months training with me! I also trained the Australasia representative for Mrs. Globe 2013 – Australian model and actress Kylie Tsiafogiannis. The competition was held in China in October 2013. She looked sensational on stage and was placed in the Top 15 out of 60 countries worldwide. In terms of my online clients, I’ve trained people like Marshall Mutsamwira who lost 5kgs within a month, now has a 6 pack and is now modelling in Harare.

EAW: Well hopefully I’ll be one of those success stories soon, it’s always motivating to see others who’ve had success.

Yes you will be. As long as you stick to your eating plan and regular exercise, you’ll see results! I’m already proud of the way you’ve committed to getting fitter and healthier. Your improved health will not only impact you, but the lives of those around you and your work as you exude your newfound wellness. I’m here with you 100% of the way!

EAW: I have to admit I’m hoping more people out there will join me on this quest and we can keep each other motivated. Tell us a little about your current promotion for those that might want to dig deeper.

It’s called the New Year New Body Offer. This is a global promotional offer and is valid to claim until 31 January 2014, for those who want to do one on one sessions with me in Melbourne and those Australia wide and globally who would like to get fit through the Fitness to a Tee private members’ videos and personalised daily meal plan.
